The real enemy of high performance is not stress, which may vary in intensity from a stimulus for growth to physical and mental exhaustion; it is chronic stress without disciplined, intermittent recovery that depletes energy reserves and leads to burnout and breakdown. Most people develop mechanisms to cope with occasional bad days, however when bad days have no end in sight, chronic fatigue takes a turn for something much more serious. A mix of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and ineffectiveness -the three dimensions of burnout- can be detrimental to the individual, their family, friends, team, organization, and community. Everyone is impacted by a leader's inability to lead and be themselves when they shut down.

While burnout affects and estimated 76% of the workforce at least sometimes, it is not easy to detect. The fear of showing their vulnerability, of missing an opportunity for promotion, or of job loss make people hide or ignore the red flags of this serious work-related syndrome, and sometimes cope in unhealthy ways. As a result, the organization's decision-making, customer service, quality control, and innovation stall; and raw emotions are on the rise.
